There is considerable overlap between counseling and therapy, but differences do exist. Counseling is often short-term and generally refers to working with a trained professional to address problems in everyday living or change relatively simple behaviors. Therapy, also known as psychotherapy, involves working on more serious issues that usually take longer to address. The work may entail resolving issues from the past that affect one's current circumstances. At its best, therapy aids in the psychological healing of an individual. The terms counseling and therapy are often used interchangeably, even on this site. While understanding the distinctions may be helpful, the most important consideration for a potential client is selecting a practitioner who is skilled in handling your problem and with whom you feel comfortable.
Coaching also involves working with a trained professional. In coaching, however, the assumption is that the individual doesn't need healing and only requires support to meet his or her goals. The past is generally not discussed, only the present and the future, and the scope of the sessions is relatively narrow.
The descriptions below relate specifically to the services offered by Creative Counseling and Coaching Services, LLC.
Individual Counseling or Therapy involves one client meeting with a therapist face-to-face to address issues of concern and work toward resolution. Sessions are normally fifty-five minutes and may be held on a short-term or long-term basis.
Group Therapy consists of multiple clients meeting with a therapist face-to-face to address issues of concern and work toward resolution. Group therapy sessions are for ninety minutes and are held for a minimum of twelve weeks, but can extend for considerably longer periods of time, depending on the clinical need and the willingness of the participants.
Support groups entail multiple clients meeting with a therapist face-to-face to share feelings, provide feedback and offer camaraderie to each other. Since support groups are often short-term, it may be more appropriate to discuss issues that can be resolved relatively quickly. For more complicated issues that require a longer time to address, participation in a support group may be followed by enrollment in a therapy group.
Educational or psychoeducation groups consist of multiple individuals and a facilitator meeting on an ongoing basis for a specified period of time. The purpose of these groups is to impart information on a topic, such as stress management or relapse prevention.
Seminars are one-time events in which participants and a facilitator meet face-to-face to discuss a designated issue, such as balancing home and work.
The Sister Circle is offered periodically so that women can have a safe place to "check in" and interact with other women. Although the therapist may intoduce a topic, participants can also raise issues for discussion.
Retreats offer an opportunity to get away from everyday responsibilities, rest, reflect and focus on a particular topic. Retreats generally take place over the course of a weekend and are held at a location conducive to relaxation and introspection.
Life coaching involves meeetings between a coach and a client, often with the assistance of technology. The client and coach work on agreed upon goals and monitor the client's progress in reaching them. Coaching sessions may be held on a short-term or a long-term basis.
Staff training can be scheduled to provide opportunities for agency personnel to learn more about a host of topics relating to mental health, substance abuse or team building.
